Orthoptic Rehabilitation and Its Impact on Visual and Physical Performance in Elite Rowers
Vision is a key determinant of athletic performance, influencing coordination, decision-making, and injury
prevention. Rowing, as an Olympic discipline, requires both endurance and precise neuromuscular
control. This prospective experimental study examined the effects of orthoptic rehabilitation on visual and
physical performance in elite rowers. Ten athletes were recruited from the National Center for Sports
Medicine and Science (CNMSS) and a rowing club, and divided into two groups: an experimental group
undergoing orthoptic rehabilitation and a control group. All participants received initial and final
orthoptic and physical assessments. Results revealed that the experimental group demonstrated significant
improvements in visual performance (ocular motility, coordination, visual reaction) and enhanced physical
outcomes compared to controls. These findings highlight the importance of integrating orthoptic
rehabilitation into athletic preparation. Beyond visual acuity, sports performance depends on sensory,
motor, and functional skills, as well as ocular dominance. Orthoptists therefore play a crucial role in
optimizing performance and reducing injury risk in elite athletes.
